September 2024: The foundations of the rapid impact phase of the Chad Territorial Development and Resilience Project (RESITCHAD) are being laid

A joint mission was organized in August and September 2024 in the northern provinces of Chad to present the project to stakeholders. This mission also aimed to launch the process of identifying the priority needs of the populations through community consultations and sectoral diagnoses based on local planning documents (PDC, PDP).

An initiative of the State of Chad, the rapid impact phase of the RESITCHAD project is funded by the World Bank and implemented by IOM over a 24-month period in the provinces of Borkou, Ennedi Est, Ennedi Ouest and Tibesti, particularly in the cities of Faya, Amdjarass, Bahai, Ouré Cassoni, Fada and Bardai. This program aims to strengthen the resilience of local communities to climate challenges and improve their access to basic services.

Encouraging results from the presentation mission

  • Local authorities, communities and civil society organizations have actively participated in the needs identification process and the definition of priorities.
  • Provisionally, many sub-projects have been identified in sectors as diverse as education, health, entrepreneurship and sustainable infrastructure.
  • IOM has implemented a community-based planning approach, which ensures that sub-projects meet the real needs of the population but also the participation of all social strata with a particular focus on vulnerable people.

"This project is a real breath of fresh air for our region. It will allow us to improve our living conditions and give new perspectives to our communities, in particular women and young people, while including the most vulnerable." Djimta Ben-Dergon, Governor of the Borkou province.

The next steps

Following the official launch of the project in October 2024 in Faya, IOM will support the Government of Chad in the implementation of this important project.

The rapid impact phase of the RESI-TCHAD project will invest in climate-resilient community infrastructure, identified by the local communities themselves, in order to reduce the vulnerabilities specific to the isolation of targeted areas. It will involve implementing transformative investments at the level of the project's intervention cities in order to trigger a structural transformation based on local potentials and opportunities and to sustainably support socioeconomic development and access to quality social services for communities, including refugees and migrants.
