Community stabilization initiatives are designed to support stability in fragile context, promote local capacities and provide socio-economic infrastructure, including livelihood alternatives, to rural communities. In the Lac, Kanem, Barh el-Ghazel, Borkou, Ennedi-Ouest and Tibesti provinces, IOM implements a range of community stabilisation initiatives across multiple sectors, with a focus inter alia on: Improving access and provision of essential services such as health and education ; Rehabilitation and augmentation of basic community infrastructure, including local markets ; Supporting local governance capacity and economic recovery, including through cash-based programming and small-grants administration ; Using community engagement to improve participation, social cohesion and peacebuilding ; Consulting with all stakeholders to identify and implement community priorities and build trust in government.

Disengagement, Disassociation, Reintegration, and Reconciliation: Conflict Dissolution and Peacebuilding in the Lake Chad Region (Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon)

This project aims to support the civilian government of Chad to develop and implement effective strategies and action plans to manage the growing number of people who have defected or disengaged from armed groups.

Community Stabilization in Kanem, and Bahr el Ghazal, Donor: Kingdom of the Netherlands 

With this project funded by the Netherlands, IOM implements its community stabilization program in the Greater Lake Chad region. The project started in October 2022 and will end in September 2024. The activities encompass the construction of community infrastructures, implementation of vocational trainings, supporting income generating activities, and providing mental health and psycho-social activities in rural areas. The project will be implemented with government run vocational training centers, and a local NGO will support in providing business trainings to women cooperatives. 

Community Stabilization in Batha, Kanem, and Bahr el Ghazal, Donor: Swiss agency for Development and Cooperation 

This Swiss funded project focuses its attention mainly in the province of Batha and sidelines the activities of the Dutch funded project in Kanem and Bahr el Ghazal. The project period is December 2023 up to January 2025. The activities encompass the construction of community infrastructures, implementation of vocational trainings, supporting income generating activities, and providing mental health and psycho-social activities in rural areas. The project will be implemented with the government run vocational training center in Ati.
