Partnership for Humanitarian Assistance: The US Ambassador in Chad visits an IOM-supported reception site for internally displaced people
N'Djaména,Chad_30 December 2024 - The United States Ambassador to Chad, Mr Alexander Laskaris, together with the Chadian Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs, and partners IOM, WFP, Acted and CAIDEL, visited the Koundoul 2 site of flood affected people to see the impact of the emergency humanitarian assistance project for populations displaced by the recent floods that hit N'Djaména and the Lake region.
‘I am impressed by the resilience of the communities affected by the floods and by the effectiveness of the humanitarian response coordinated by the IOM,’ said US Ambassador Alexander Laskaris. “This project is an example of the cooperation between our two countries to address humanitarian crises and improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable populations,” he added.
During his visit, the Ambassador spoke with the beneficiaries of the humanitarian aid and the members of the site management committee, who stressed the importance of the shelters for their safety and dignity. ‘These temporary shelters give us a roof over our heads and allow us to rebuild our lives’, said one beneficiary. Discussions with the communities also highlighted the challenges posed by recurrent flooding, which has forced many families to leave their homes.

The Chadian Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs expressed its gratitude to the partners for their support and reaffirmed its commitment to finding lasting solutions. ‘Thanks to our partners, we have been able to provide urgently needed aid to those who need it most. This has enabled us to put in place support measures such as temporary shelters, medical care and meals, as well as other vital resources to help these communities get back on their feet. Together, we are demonstrating the power of solidarity and mutual aid ’. Djelassem Djedouboum Yannick, Deputy Director of Programming at the Chadian Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs.
Within the framework of the emergency humanitarian assistance project for populations displaced by the recent floods that hit N'Djamena and the lake region, financed by the United States Office of Humanitarian Assistance (USAID) and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in support of the Chadian government, 700 transitional shelters and 70 sanitation facilities have been built by the organizations ACTED and CAIDEL, offering safe refuge to hundreds of families. In addition, IOM has distributed shelter kits and essential non-food items, as well as setting up water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities.
‘We are very grateful for USAID's support, which enables us to intervene quickly and effectively on behalf of the most vulnerable populations. Thanks to this partnership, we can provide vital humanitarian assistance to displaced people and help improve their living conditions,’ said Pascal Reyntjens, IOM Head of Mission in Chad.
