Official launch of the rapid impact phase of the RESITCHAD resilience and territorial development project in Chad in Faya

Faya, 10 October 2024 - The rapid impact phase of the RESITCHAD (Resilience and Territorial Development of Chad) project was officially launched in Faya, in the presence of local authorities, technical and financial partners, and local residents. This initiative of the government of Chad, financed by the World Bank and implemented by IOM in the provinces of Borkou, Ennedi East, Ennedi West and Tibesti, aims to strengthen the resilience of local communities in the face of climatic challenges, and improve their access to basic services by supporting the local economy.

A participatory approach at the heart of the project
During discussions with civil society, local communities, in particular women, young people and traditional leaders, expressed their expectations and priorities, particularly in terms of access to drinking water, education, healthcare and support for economic empowerment by strengthening micro-projects.

As the Governor of Faya, H.E. Mr Djimta Ben-Dergon, pointed out, ‘I invite local communities to take ownership of this project and to spare no effort to ensure its success, because local communities are at the heart of this project for the development of Chad’.

At the official launch ceremony, the Minister and Secretary of State for Finance and the Budget, HE Mr Ali Djadda Kampard, pointed out that this project was fully in line with the vision of the President of the Republic of Chad to guarantee access to basic services for all citizens. Mr Mahamat Nahar Youssouf, Coordinator of RESITCHAD, also spoke of the current challenges to which RESICTHAD is responding: ‘This project is a response to the challenges facing the region, particularly in terms of vulnerability and access to basic services. The investments made will improve access to water, health and education, and create economic opportunities.

Community participation and partnership are at the heart of RESITCHAD's success, as Aminta Dicko, IOM's Deputy Head of Mission in Chad, explains: ‘The IOM mission in Chad is committed to supporting the government in this first rapid-impact phase by strengthening community participation and social cohesion’.

Concrete actions for sustainable development
The day after the launch, the first stones of several infrastructures were laid, marking the start of the project's implementation phase. These infrastructures, such as a training centre, an emergency medical case management building and a primary school extension, will significantly improve access to essential services for the people of Faya.
